The Practice: More Than Movement

Shaolin Baduanjin – the "Eight Treasures" – is a living thread connecting you to a 5,000-year-old wisdom tradition. Forged within the Shaolin Temple, these eight movements are a strong form of moving meditation, a precise method to harmonise your body's energy (Qi), breath, and focused intention.

This is a timeless practice for building foundational health. Each posture, passed down through an unbroken lineage, is designed to strengthen the muscles and tendons, nourish the internal organs, and calm the nervous system. You are learning a complete system of self-care, not just a sequence of exercises. As warrior Monks have for thousands of years.

Your Brighton Reset: The Weekly Ritual

In the heart of our vibrant, sometimes overwhelming city, this class offers a sanctuary of deliberate slowness and strength. Every Tuesday evening, we step out of the rush to engage in a different kind of productivity: the cultivation of internal peace and durable energy.

What We Cultivate Together:

  • A Resilient Nervous System: Swap the "fight-or-flight" of daily life for the restorative "rest-and-digest" state through rhythmic breath and flow.

  • Embodied Strength: Open the shoulders, spine, and hips like a Shaolin Warrior. Countering the tightness of desk life and building posture from the inside out.

  • Focused Calm: Train your attention to settle in the present moment, using the breath as an anchor for a clear, steady mind.

  • Sustainable Energy: Learn to generate and circulate vitality and promote strength and longevity.

Why This Class Is Unique in Brighton

You will find no generic wellness here. This teaching sits at a rare crossroads:

  • Authentic Lineage: I am a student of Grandmaster Shifu Yanzi of the Shaolin Temple UK. The forms, breathwork, and principles you learn are rooted in a direct, traditional transmission.

  • Physiotherapist’s Lens: My clinical practice informs every cue. You’ll understand why a movement works, how to adapt it for your body, and how to practise with intelligent safety. It’s ancient wisdom made accessible to modern bodies.

This unique blend ensures you receive a practice that is both profoundly traditional and immediately practical.

“Brighton thrives on energy, but we all know the feeling of being drained by it. My purpose is to share the tools that help you not just manage, but thrive—with a practice that is as grounding as it is empowering. This is not about adding more to your life; it's about returning to a deeper, quieter source of strength within it. I hope you'll join us..”

FAQs

I’ve never done anything like this. Is it for me?

1

Absolutely. The practice meets you where you are. Every movement can be adapted, and the focus is on internal feeling, not external form.

How is this different from yoga?

2

While both are mindful movement arts, Baduanjin is rooted in Shaolin Martial arts. It is typically performed standing, with static postures and flowing motions coordinated with specific breathing patterns. It emphasises the smooth circulation of energy along the body's pathways, and the strengthening of muscles tendons and organs.

What if I can only come occasionally?

3

The drop-in format is perfect for that. Each class is a complete practice, though you will notice your depth of understanding grow with consistency.

How can I contact you?
